Now that 2013 is nearly over, let’s talk trends we’ve seen this year…
The pixie cut is the first to spring to mind. Now we all know that the pixie isn’t new but the amount of celebs rocking the ‘do let’s us know the trend is back with vengeance! From J-Law, J-Hud, Queen B to Pammy Anderson we’ve seen an influx of the crop and the bravery that comes with it. It’s a big step to take for your clients once they decide to take the plunge – so what are you recommending they use to get the look right or compliment their new snip?
Colour should be your first suggestion… a fresh colour should always accompany a fresh cut, don’t forget it’s your name they’re wearing on their head so make it jaw dropping! If they’re not big on colour, suggest a few highlights/low lights to make the texture stand out and that way they’re not stepping completely out of their comfort zone!
Styling… get this right and they’ll love their hair forever not just until they wash it next.
Here are my top tips for short hair styling –
- OSIS Dust It – it’s gritty, it”s light and it gives texture without weighing the hair down and without giving it that gross, all too familiar greasy feeling. It’s user friendly too which will win you big brownie points!
- Paul Mitchell Spray Wax – This one is tops! It’s an aerosol spray wax that is super easy to use, lightweight, gets you great texture and has a shine factor. Winner!
- Affinage Sea Salt Wax – Giving you that awesome “beach babe” look, it has a hold factor of a 2, is easily workable AND it strengthens and moisturizes as you wear it, bonus!
Pastel hair – again it’s one that’s been around for years but has made a massive comeback thanks to its appearance on many a catwalk and celeb this year.
Chanel did cropped pastel bobs (to die for!), Anna Sui rocked short and ponytail pastels, Kelly Osbourne has made pastel lavender her trade mark and I fell head over heels for Ke$ha at the American Music Awards, subtle yet edgy – she totally nailed it! So what do you guys use in salon to get your clients where they wanna be? Sadly no one is making a lot of perfect pastels direct from the bottle/tube but you can absolutely get creative and customize your own!
Kimdec sell a range of brights to create your own rainbow!
- Crazy Colour – a massive range of sweet and rock n roll colours that will get your brain thinking of where to go next… This colour has been around since before I was born so you know it’s stood the test of time! It’s a favourite of mine to use in salon because of the wide range but I also love it’s lasting power! This range has pastels in pink and lavender tones but they also have a neutral available that you can use as a pastelizer or you can mix them with a treatment/conditioner for a more semi result.
- Fudge – everyone knows Fudge! Again, it has a large range, great lasting power, tried and tested but no pastels with these guys though so you’ll have to get mixing.
- Affinage Colour Co-Ordinates – a unique gel colour that you can create brights and pastels with in a massive range of tones and shades.
All of these colours are available to on sell to your clients too which is awesome, they can refresh at home with no hassle!
Finally, nails. Stiletto nails, claws whatever you call them, they hit big this year…
Thank Lana Del Ray, Rihanna and Gaga for getting the fierce look out there.
If you haven’t been game to try it yet, I highly recommend it! Treat yourself for Christmas! And you’ll be braiding with ease with your own little “sectioning claws” on the tips of your fingers
I like mine as sharp as sharp can be but if you’re trying them for the first time, maybe dull them down a little until you’re used to them – I put holes in so many of my clothes with my sharpies! With these nails, nail art has no limit – try tip colours, half moon colours, Lana Del Ray style heart tips, do studs, do chains, go edgy, just have fun with it!
Try an ORLY colour you wouldn’t normally embrace and pick up some rhinestones while you’re in store – try out some DIY nail art yourself! Kimdec even has nail art pens.
Kimdec’s Pinterest board “Tip of Your Fingers” has a heap of inspiration and DIY art for you to try, go on, get crafty!
Until next time, babes,
